Here’s what makes it interesting from an educator’s perspective:

There’s also a paid HD subscription, but even the free 10-meter satellite resolution is more than enough for classroom exploration.

It runs on the Cesium virtual globe framework, similar in feel to Google Earth, but interactive and fully flyable.

Imagine This in a Social Studies Classroom

Let me walk you through what I pictured.

You start class at your local airport.

If I were doing this here in Puerto Rico, I’d load up Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

Students take off.

The plane climbs.

You engage autopilot once stable.

And while the aircraft cruises…

Students research the destination.

Maybe today we’re studying:

• The Nile River

• The Amazon Rainforest

• The Great Wall of China

• Rome during the Roman Empire

• The Appalachian Mountains

Once students identify key landmarks, they become navigators.

“Alright, find the Nile Delta.”
“Where is the Colosseum?”
“Locate the Andes.”

Then they descend and fly toward those spots.

Now imagine the assignment:

Take aerial screenshots of three important geographic features.
Annotate them.
Explain their historical or economic importance.

That’s not passive learning.

That’s immersive geography.

Turning It Into a Structured Lesson

Here’s how I’d structure it:

1. Launch Phase

Students start at a local airport.
Quick refresher on latitude, longitude, and global regions.

2. Research Phase

While cruising at altitude, students research:

• Climate

• Population

• Major exports

• Historical significance

• Cultural landmarks

3. Navigation Phase

Students guide the plane toward specific landmarks using:

• Map search

• Coordinates

• Visual cues

4. Documentation Phase

Students capture screenshots of:

• Landforms

• Cities

• Rivers

• Borders

Then they create a short presentation explaining what they “observed from the air.”

Why This Works

As teachers, we know engagement changes everything.

When students feel like they’re traveling somewhere, geography stops being abstract.

It becomes spatial.
Visual.
Real.

GeoFS even simulates:

• Stall physics

• Weather patterns

• Day/night cycles

You could even integrate science by discussing wind currents or terrain elevation.

And yes, there are fighter jets and airliners too. So, supervision matters.

But as a structured classroom tool? It has serious potential.

The Bigger Idea

We talk a lot about “virtual field trips.”

But most of the time that means clicking through photos.

This feels different.

This feels active.

This feels like giving students control over their exploration.

And I can’t help but imagine a unit where:

• Students “fly” trade routes

• Recreate historical voyages

• Track global climate zones

• Compare urban density from above

Learning through movement.

Learning through perspective.

Learning through play.

Final Thought

GeoFS wasn’t designed specifically for schools.

But sometimes the best educational tools aren’t labeled “educational.”

They’re just powerful and creative teachers see the possibilities.

SimCity BuildIt is a free-to-play city-building game where you design a city from the ground up. Roads, water systems, power plants, residential zones, factories, parks... the whole package. You’re constantly balancing the needs of your citizens with the natural limitations of land, money, and time. And yes, because it’s a mobile game, it has waiting periods and microtransactions. But the core experience is still classic SimCity: plan, build, adjust, repeat.

Why It Works as a Classroom Lens

City-building games are hidden gold mines for teaching real-world concepts. Even though SimCity BuildIt simplifies things, it still requires players to think critically about:

• Urban planning
• Resource management
• Cause and effect
• Budgeting and prioritizing
• Patience and long-term planning
• Understanding how communities function

Students don’t always see how complex a city really is. But when a tiny virtual town suddenly needs more electricity, better fire coverage, or a new sewage system, they feel that complexity. And they have to solve it.

The Learning Connections

Here are the skills that naturally show up while playing:

Critical Thinking
You constantly evaluate what your city needs versus what you want to build. Power first, parks later.

Economics & Budgeting
You can’t build everything at once. Players learn fast that every decision has a cost, and prioritizing becomes essential.

Spatial Reasoning
Where you place buildings matters. Too much distance from services means unhappy citizens. Too little planning means everything feels cramped.

Patience & Time Management
Resources take time to build, upgrades don’t happen instantly, and expansions require long-term planning. Students who love rushing will quickly learn that slow and steady is sometimes the only option.

Problem-Solving
Your city will complain. A lot. Traffic, pollution, fires, unhappy Sims. But each complaint becomes a problem to solve rather than something to ignore.

Would I Use It in Class?

Not directly as a main lesson, but absolutely as:

• a brain break option for responsible students
• inspiration for a creative writing assignment
• a compare-and-contrast task with real-life city structures
• a design challenge where students sketch their own cities
• a discussion starter about why communities need rules and systems

SimCity BuildIt won’t turn students into civil engineers, but it will make them think like one for a moment. And honestly, that’s already a win.

Things Teachers and Parents Should Know

• It includes waiting timers, which can frustrate younger kids.
• There are microtransactions, easily avoidable but visible.
• It works best with students who enjoy planning and strategy.
• Ads aren’t constant, but they’re part of the mobile experience.

Still, the educational value outweighs the inconveniences, especially when used intentionally.

Final Thoughts

SimCity BuildIt is one of those mobile games that quietly teaches you as you play. You start placing buildings just for fun, and before long you’re balancing budgets, negotiating land use, and making sure your sewage system can handle new residential zones. The Game Behind the Madness

Developed and published by TECOPARK, Pico Park is a minimalist co-op puzzle game that first launched on PC back in 2016. It didn’t make huge waves initially—but word of mouth, YouTube playthroughs, and the rise of party-friendly indie games helped it gather momentum. The Nintendo Switch version arrived in 2021, giving the game a fresh new audience. With its adorable pixel art, simple controls, and devilishly clever level design, it’s easy to underestimate what Pico Park is really about: forced cooperation.

My First Time Playing (And Laughing)

That night at my brother’s house, we quickly realized this wasn’t your average game. You can’t just win Pico Park by being good. Everyone has to be in sync. If one person doesn’t jump, the rest can’t move forward. If someone rushes ahead, they’ll likely pull the team back. That tension—balanced with hilarious visuals and goofy sound effects—creates an unforgettable group experience. Even my wife, a non-gamer, got into the rhythm, following instructions, laughing, and celebrating each victory with the rest of us.

From Couch Chaos to Classroom Challenge

Inspired by how well the game brought people together, I bought Pico Park and introduced it to my students. I was nervous—seven players at once? In a classroom? Predictable chaos. And yes, at first, it was loud and messy. But slowly, they figured it out. They began communicating better, making plans, assigning roles, and cheering when they finally beat a tough level. I stumbled upon AI a while back, and like many educators, I was curious about how it could be used in the classroom. I had already been using ChatGPT for a variety of tasks—especially proofreading my articles—but I wanted to explore its potential for teaching. At first, I saw how AI could quickly create lesson plans and worksheets for grammar topics, and hey, it worked fine! But I soon ran into the real challenge with AI: prompt building.

For those unfamiliar, prompt building is the process of crafting the right instructions for an AI model to ensure it gives you exactly what you need. Without a good prompt, you're never going to get precisely what you're looking for. This is where new AI tools designed specifically for teachers, like MagicSchool AI, come in. A common concern among educators—including myself—is that deeper assessments take significantly more time to grade. How can we maintain meaningful evaluation while managing the workload? Here are a few strategies:

• Selective Justifications: Instead of requiring explanations for every answer, ask students to justify only select questions or when they choose a specific option.

• AI-Assisted Grading & Technology Tools: Platforms like EssayGrader.ai or EdTech auto-scoring quizzes can save time while providing valuable feedback.

• Rubric-Based Quick Grading: Develop clear, concise rubrics that allow for fast, consistent scoring.

• Peer and Self-Assessments: Structured peer and self-assessments can ease grading loads while reinforcing learning.

• Hybrid Approach: Combining auto-graded quizzes, peer reviews, and teacher-evaluated assessments balances efficiency with meaningful evaluation.

The Power of Performance-Based and Authentic Assessments

Beyond traditional testing, some of the most effective assessments come from real-world applications of knowledge:

But at the same time, if AI can help struggling students improve their writing, is it really a bad thing?

While AI raises concerns, there’s no denying its potential to improve education. AI can be incredibly helpful for struggling writers. Many students find writing overwhelming, whether due to learning disabilities, language barriers, or difficulty structuring their thoughts. AI tools provide instant grammar and spelling corrections, suggest better sentence structure, and offer real-time feedback on tone and readability. Instead of feeling lost in the writing process, students can receive guidance that helps them grow as writers.

For students learning English as a second language, AI can bridge the gap by offering rephrased sentences, clarifying word choices, and providing instant feedback without the fear of judgment. These tools allow students to build confidence in their writing and refine their communication skills independently. In many ways, AI acts as an equalizer, ensuring that students who struggle with writing have access to tools that support their growth.

Teachers also benefit from AI’s efficiency. • Makenzie Gilkison, a 14-year-old from Indianapolis, has dyslexia. Spelling has always been a struggle for her—words like rhinoceros might come out as rineanswsaurs. Before using assistive AI tools, she felt frustrated and assumed she was simply “stupid.” However, with AI-powered chatbots, word prediction programs, and text-to-speech tools, she’s not just keeping up—she’s excelling. In fact, she was even named to the National Junior Honor Society last year. “I would have just probably given up if I didn’t have them,” she shared.

• Ben Snyder, another 14-year-old, uses AI to break down math problems and create outlines for writing assignments. Diagnosed with a learning disability, he found that AI helped him grasp concepts that weren’t clear in class. “Sometimes in math, my teachers will explain a problem to me, but it just makes absolutely no sense,” he said. AI allows him to see multiple explanations, helping him better understand difficult material.

These stories are powerful examples of AI’s potential. When used effectively, AI tools give students independence, confidence, and access to educational experiences that might have otherwise felt impossible.

The Challenge of Balance: Assistance vs. Learning

AI can do a lot for students, but schools must ensure that it doesn’t replace fundamental skill-building. As Hollingsworth’s article points out:

“There is concern about how to ensure students using it — including those with disabilities — are still learning.”

This is something I’ve seen firsthand. Some students treat AI as a shortcut, rather than as a tool to aid comprehension. Schools and educators need to guide students in using AI responsibly, ensuring that it supports skill development rather than allowing them to bypass essential learning.

The Ethical Risks of AI in Special Education

Another critical issue is the potential for AI to unintentionally disclose a student’s disability. AI systems are designed to recognize patterns, but what happens when those patterns lead to unintended consequences?

“Another risk is that AI will track students into less rigorous courses of study. And, because it is so good at identifying patterns, AI might be able to figure out a student has a disability. Having that disclosed by AI and not the student or their family could create ethical dilemmas, said Luis Pérez, the disability and digital inclusion lead at CAST, formerly the Center for Applied Specialized Technology.”

Imagine a scenario where an AI-powered learning system automatically identifies a student as needing special education services based on their writing patterns. What happens if this classification is made without consent? Schools must set clear ethical guidelines to ensure that AI does not track students into less rigorous courses or disclose sensitive information without approval from families.

Today, the rapid advancements in technology have completely reshaped how educators teach and how students engage with lessons. In this article, I want to take a trip down memory lane and explore how education has evolved from simple chalk and paper to interactive smartboards and personal devices.

1. The Early Days: Chalk and Paper

In the classrooms of my childhood, the green chalkboard was the centerpiece of instruction. Teachers used sticks of white and yellow chalk to scribble notes, draw diagrams, and solve math problems in real time. There was a rhythm to the day: the sound of chalk scratching against the board, the occasional screech when it was pressed too hard, and the dreaded moment when a student had to clap dusty erasers outside.

Notebooks were essential. Every student had their collection of composition books, filled with handwritten notes, doodles in the margins, and the occasional smudge from an eraser that didn’t quite do its job. Learning was completely manual—if you didn’t write it down, you had no record of it. Teachers dictated, students copied, and that was the norm.

2. The Whiteboard Revolution

Sometime in the 90s, we started seeing whiteboards replace the green chalkboards. At first, it felt strange—not having to deal with chalk dust was a luxury! Whiteboards brought a cleaner, more efficient way of delivering lessons. Dry-erase markers were easier to use and erased smoothly without the mess of chalk residue. Teachers quickly adapted, using color-coded markers to organize information and make lessons more visually engaging.

This was also when learning started to feel a little more interactive. Unlike chalkboards, where content had to be erased after a certain amount of time, teachers could keep whiteboard notes visible for longer periods, making review sessions more effective.

One of the biggest technological jumps in my school days was the overhead projector. I remember teachers rolling in a large, bulky machine, turning off the lights, and placing laminated slides on the projector’s glass surface. These transparencies were either handwritten or printed and could be layered to show changes over time (especially useful in subjects like math or science).

Teachers often kept these slides stored in folders for reuse, and some even wrote directly on them with erasable markers. The experience of watching words or diagrams appear on the pull-down screen in front of the class felt high-tech at the time. It allowed teachers to face the class while presenting, something that wasn’t as easy when writing on a board.

4. Interactive Learning: Smartboards and Digital Whiteboards

Fast forward to the 2000s, and smartboards started appearing in classrooms. No longer were we confined to markers and static slides—these interactive whiteboards allowed teachers to integrate digital elements into their lessons. Perhaps the most significant shift in education technology has been the rise of personal learning devices. Where once we relied on composition notebooks and textbooks, students today have tablets, laptops, and even smartphones as their primary learning tools.

I remember when computers started becoming a part of classroom instruction. At first, they were tucked away in computer labs, where we had specific periods to practice typing or play educational games. But over time, they became more integrated into daily lessons.

Now, schools implement 1:1 device programs, ensuring every student has access to a personal device. Platforms like Google Classroom, iPads in education, and digital textbooks have made learning more flexible and accessible. Students can collaborate in real-time, submit assignments digitally, and access resources far beyond the confines of a traditional textbook.

6. The Future of EdTech

With each advancement, education technology continues to push boundaries. We are now seeing the rise of AI, VR, and AR in classrooms, promising even more immersive learning experiences. Adaptive learning platforms personalize education based on individual student needs, helping them progress at their own pace.

However, it’s important to remember that while technology enhances learning, it shouldn’t replace fundamental skills. Think about all the smart boards, projectors, student laptops, and gaming devices we use in classrooms. If tariffs drive up the cost of these essential tools, it won’t just be a problem for companies—it’ll be a problem for educators and students.

So, let’s break this down. What do these tariffs actually mean? And what can schools and educators do to prepare?

What Are These Tariffs, and Why Do They Matter?

A tariff is essentially a tax placed on goods that are imported from another country. Governments use tariffs to make foreign products more expensive, theoretically encouraging companies to manufacture domestically.

Here’s what’s happening now:

The U.S. has implemented a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, meaning goods made in China—including many classroom technology products—are going to get more expensive. Additionally, a 25% tariff has been placed on imports from Canada and Mexico, which also manufacture a lot of educational and gaming tech. These tariffs directly impact monitors, Chromebooks, projectors, and gaming consoles, meaning schools could see major price increases on the devices they rely on.

How Will This Affect Education?

Higher Prices on Classroom Technology

Many of the tools we use in schools today are manufactured in China or Mexico. That includes interactive smart boards, projectors, monitors, Chromebooks, Microsoft Surface tablets, and networking equipment. Schools that rely on these tools will have to spend more money to get the same technology they were buying before, forcing them to either stretch their budgets or make difficult choices about what to cut.

Tighter Budgets, Fewer Upgrades

School districts often operate with fixed budgets, and many are already struggling to provide up-to-date technology for students. When costs rise due to tariffs, schools may have to delay upgrading outdated devices, limit the number of devices per classroom, or reduce funding for professional development to compensate.

This isn't just speculation—it’s happened before. In 2019, the Green Bay Area Public School District in Wisconsin had to pay an extra $70,000 for technology due to tariffs on Chinese imports. That’s money that could have been spent on improving classrooms, hiring additional staff, or expanding educational programs.

Widening the Digital Divide

Not all schools are equally funded. Wealthier schools may be able to absorb these price hikes, but underfunded schools could fall behind. This could lead to unequal access to technology, fewer online learning opportunities, and a reduced ability to teach digital literacy and STEM subjects. If students aren’t exposed to modern technology, they won’t develop the skills needed for 21st-century careers.

How Will This Affect Gaming in Education?

More Expensive Gaming Consoles and Devices

Gaming isn’t just for entertainment—it’s a powerful educational tool. Many schools use gaming in the classroom with platforms like Minecraft Education Edition, Nintendo Labo for STEM learning, and gamified learning platforms like GimKit, Blooket, and Kahoot. But with the Nintendo Switch 2 and other gaming devices likely seeing price hikes, schools may struggle to justify using gaming as a teaching tool.

EdTech Subscriptions and Digital Learning Platforms

Many educational tools depend on affordable student devices. If schools can’t afford new Chromebooks or tablets, fewer students will have access to Quizlet Live, AI-based tutoring apps, and interactive learning platforms that require up-to-date technology. A tariff that raises device costs doesn’t just impact hardware—it also affects software accessibility and digital learning experiences.

How Could These Tariffs Be Implemented More Fairly?

If the goal of tariffs is to encourage U.S. companies to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S., then they should be targeting companies that moved production overseas, not companies that were never based in the U.S. to begin with.

Take Google’s Chromebooks, for example. Google is an American company, but their Chromebooks are manufactured in China and Taiwan by third-party companies like Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo. These companies rely on China’s well-established tech supply chain for parts, labor, and assembly. The question we should be asking is: Why was Chromebook production moved overseas in the first place?

Similarly, Nintendo is a Japanese company that never manufactured in the U.S.. Placing tariffs on their Chinese-manufactured consoles won’t make them relocate production to America—it will just make their products more expensive for American consumers. If tariffs are meant to encourage domestic production, they should focus on American companies that outsourced their manufacturing, like Apple, HP, and Dell, rather than companies that never had a U.S. manufacturing presence.

Instead of a blanket tariff that increases costs for all imported technology, a better approach would be to specifically target companies that deliberately moved production overseas to cut costs. That way, schools and educators wouldn’t have to pay the price for decisions made by global corporations.

What Can Schools and Educators Do?

Educators and school administrators need to start preparing for these changes. One approach is to advocate for better funding at the district and state level to offset the rising costs of classroom technology. Schools can also apply for grants specifically aimed at technology improvements to ensure that students continue to have access to modern learning tools.

Another solution is to explore alternative devices and manufacturers that are not as heavily affected by tariffs. Some non-Chinese tech brands from South Korea, Taiwan, or Europe might offer more cost-effective options. Schools may also consider refurbished devices as a way to reduce expenses without sacrificing quality.

Finally, some districts may need to adopt hybrid learning models where students are encouraged to bring their own devices. Schools that implement BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies can help reduce reliance on school-funded technology, though this approach requires careful planning to ensure equity for students who may not have access to personal devices.

Just like how Minecraft evolved into Minecraft Education, I can imagine a version of Stardew Valley tailored for the classroom—one that focuses on environmental science, economics, and social-emotional learning in an even more structured, educational format. The foundation is already there; it just needs a little refining.

By looking beyond the surface, educators can find creative ways to engage students and teach real-world skills.

It’s fast-paced, fun, and designed to make learning feel more like a game than a chore. And let me tell you—students absolutely love it.

As a firm believer in gamification in education, I’ve seen firsthand how turning lessons into games can boost student motivation. Gamification is all about applying game elements—like points, competition, and rewards—to non-game settings. In the classroom, this can transform a standard quiz into something that feels more like a team challenge or an adventure, making learning more engaging and interactive. It’s one of the reasons I’m so into EdTech—technology, when used thoughtfully, can unlock new ways for students to connect with material.

GimKit was created by a high school student who wanted a more engaging way to review for exams—and that’s exactly what it delivers. The platform offers a variety of game modes where students answer multiple-choice questions to progress, earn points, and interact with their peers. GimKit's mission is simple: to make learning engaging and accessible for every student.

Why I Like GimKit

One of the best things about GimKit is how easy it is to use. Teachers can create or import question sets, and students can jump into a game without needing complicated setups. The interface is intuitive, and the variety of game modes keeps things fresh.

But here’s the thing—while the games are super engaging, they can get a little hectic. Some modes ramp up the competition, and if left unsupervised, it can get out of hand. That’s why I always recommend keeping an eye on the flow of the game and stepping in when things get too intense. Like any tool, it works best when used with balance.

Exploring GimKit’s Game Modes

• 2D Modes: Students control avatars in a 2D environment, completing tasks and challenges. Correct answers give them energy or power-ups that help them progress through the game world. These modes are often the most exciting and interactive for students.

• Fishtopia: A relaxed, fishing-themed game where students catch fish to earn in-game currency by answering questions correctly. Players can explore different fishing zones and trade their fish for upgrades.

• Infinity Mode: An endless mode where students continuously answer questions to earn money and power-ups. It focuses on constant engagement without any set endpoint, ideal for practice and review.

• Color Clash: Players answer questions to claim tiles on a grid. The goal is to dominate the board with your team's color.

• Knockback: A competitive game where students answer questions to gain energy that can be used to push other players off the map.

• Don't Look Down: Players build platforms to climb higher while answering questions. One wrong move, and they fall—first one to reach the top wins!

• Snowbrawl: A snowball fight where students earn snowballs by answering questions correctly. They use them to tag other players in a fun, fast-paced battle.

• Capture The Flag: Classic capture-the-flag gameplay. Answer questions to move faster and strategize with your team to capture the opponent's flag.

• One Way Out: A maze-style game where students answer questions, unlock doors and escape the plant infested spaceship.

• Apocalypse: A survival game where players must answer questions correctly to survive waves of challenges or obstacles.

• Dig It Up: Players answer questions to earn tools that allow them to dig and uncover hidden treasures.

• Snowy Survival: A survival-based game set in a snowy landscape. Players must answer questions to gather resources and survive longer.

• Tag: Domination: A fast-paced tag game where players try to dominate the map by tagging others, powered by correct answers.

• Blastball: Answering questions lets players power up and launch explosive balls to score points for their team.

• Farmchain: Players build and expand farms by answering questions, creating a chain of production for success.

  There are many more games. I suggest you get a free trial to give them all a try.

  

Pricing: Is It Worth It?

GimKit offers a free version, but it’s pretty limited—you only get access to two game modes at a time, and those modes rotate weekly. For more consistent access, you need to look at their subscription options:

• Annual Plan: $4.99/month (billed as $59.88/year)

• Monthly Plan: $14.99/month (billed monthly, totaling $179.88/year)

Let’s be honest—the $14.99/month plan feels steep. That’s a lot for many teachers, especially when you consider how many educational tools are competing for attention (and funding). The annual plan is a much better deal if you know you’ll be using GimKit regularly. But for teachers who want to test the waters without committing to a full year, that price tag can be intimidating.

Here’s what I think could help: a $9.99/month option that offers access to half the available game modes, rotating monthly. This middle-tier option would let teachers try out more of what GimKit has to offer without feeling like they have to go all-in right away. It’s a balance between commitment and flexibility that could make a big difference.

Final Thoughts

GimKit is an incredible tool for bringing energy and excitement into the classroom. It turns traditional learning into something interactive and fun—which is exactly what gamification should do. But like any tool, it’s most effective when used thoughtfully. With the right balance of supervision and structure, it can truly enhance the learning experience.
