⛏️ Building Blocks of Language: Exploring Prepositions in the World of Minecraft
Welcome back to Grammar Through Video Games! Today, we’re grabbing our pickaxes and heading into the blocky, creative world of Minecraft to uncover one of grammar’s most useful tools — prepositions.
Whether you’re placing a bed in your house, digging a tunnel under a mountain, or fighting off mobs at night, Minecraft is full of real-time preposition practice. These little words help us describe location, direction, and relationships — in the game and in writing.
🧭 What Is a Preposition?
A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another part of the sentence. Most often, prepositions tell us about:
Place – in, on, under, beside, between
Direction – into, onto, through, across, toward
Time – before, after, during, until, at
Let’s look at a few in action:
Steve built a shelter under the mountain.
The Creeper exploded behind the wall.
Alex traveled through the jungle.
In each case, the preposition tells us where something is happening — super useful in a game like Minecraft!
🧱 What’s a Prepositional Phrase?
A prepositional phrase includes the preposition plus the noun or pronoun it connects to. Together, they act as a team to give us more info.
Example:
The diamond was hidden under the lava pool.
Prepositional phrase: under the lava pool
🔍 What Do Prepositional Phrases Do?
Here’s where things get even cooler. Prepositional phrases can act as:
🧑🎨 Adjective Phrases
They describe a noun.
The chest in the corner is full of tools.
(in the corner tells us which chest)The sword with the enchanted blade is mine.
🏃 Adverb Phrases
They describe a verb, adjective, or other adverb.
Steve ran across the bridge.
(across the bridge tells us where he ran)We built the tower after sunset.
(after sunset tells us when we built it)
Minecraft is full of prepositional phrases — whether you’re in a cave, under the sea, or next to your pet wolf.

📝 Quick Practice
Part 1: Find the Preposition
Underline the preposition in each sentence.
Alex hid behind the waterfall.
Steve ran toward the village.
A skeleton stood on the roof.
We placed a torch under the tree.
The Enderman teleported across the field.
Part 2: Name the Prepositional Phrase
Circle the full prepositional phrase.
The crafting table is next to the furnace.
I built my house on the hill.
A zombie is hiding behind the wall.
We sailed across the ocean.
My armor is in the chest.
Part 3: Adjective or Adverb Phrase?
Write ADJ if the phrase describes a noun, or ADV if it describes a verb.
The map on the table shows the stronghold. ___
The pig ran through the gate. ___
I placed a torch under the ladder. ___
The portal to the Nether glows purple. ___
We waited until sunset. ___
💬 Why Minecraft?
Minecraft is all about building and exploring — and those actions rely on knowing where things are, how far they go, and how they relate to each other. Prepositions and prepositional phrases are the language of Minecraft. And once students understand how these little words work, they’ll start spotting them everywhere — in games, in books, and in their own writing.
