🌀 Speeding Through Nouns with Sonic and Friends

Welcome back to Grammar Through Video Games! This time, we’re putting on our red sneakers and racing into the world of nouns with none other than Sonic the Hedgehog.

Nouns may not collect rings or defeat Eggman, but they’re the backbone of every sentence — and Sonic’s world is full of them.

💡 What’s a Noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
If you can see it, touch it, think it, or name it — chances are, it’s a noun.

Let’s check out a few from Sonic’s world:

• Person: Sonic, Tails, Dr. Eggman

• Place: Green Hill Zone, Lab, Hidden Palace

• Thing: ring, chili dog, Chaos Emerald

• Idea: speed, teamwork, adventure

If you say:

“Sonic dashed through the loop.”

You’ve already got two nouns: Sonic (person) and loop (thing). Easy, right?

🎯 Common vs. Proper Nouns

Now let’s go a bit deeper.

• A common noun is a general name: ring, hedgehog, level

• A proper noun is a specific name and always starts with a capital letter: Sonic, Tails, Green Hill Zone

Examples:

Common: hedgehog
Proper: Sonic

Common: machine
Proper: Eggmobile

👥 Singular and Plural Nouns

• A singular noun names one person, place, or thing.

• A plural noun names more than one.

Examples:

Singular: ring, enemy, robot
Plural: rings, enemies, robots

🔄 How to Make Plural Nouns (Sonic-Style!)

Most of the time, making a noun plural just means adding an -s or -es. But sometimes, things get a little tricky — like dodging spikes in Sonic's world. Let’s break it down:

✅ Just Add -s

For most nouns, just add -s to show there’s more than one.

1 ring → 3 rings
1 level → 2 levels
1 Chaos Emerald → 7 Chaos Emeralds

✅ Add -es to Nouns that End in:

s, x, z, ch, or sh

1 box → 2 boxes
1 glitch → 5 glitches
1 boss → 3 bosses

✅ Change -y to -ies

If a noun ends in a consonant + y, change the y to i and add -es.

1 enemy → 2 enemies
1 ability → many abilities

But if the noun ends in vowel + y, just add -s:

1 key → 4 keys

❗ Watch Out for Irregular Plurals

Some nouns don’t follow the rules. They’re rare, but worth knowing.

1 hero → 2 heroes
1 foot → 2 feet
1 child → 3 children
